Village Zoning

ZONING

Zoning is a method of urban planning in which a municipality regulates and controls how land is used. The purpose of these regulations is to ensure orderly development, protect property values, promote public safety, and maintain the overall character and function of different areas within the municipality.

The Village of Trempealeau has adopted it’s own set of zoning regulations but note that local zoning rules still need to comply within the legal framework of higher authorities. The State of WI and Federal government can adopt laws that supersede a Village’s zoning regulation.

PERMIT REQUIRED

As part of these zoning regulations, it is important to note that permits are required for various activities related to construction, renovations, and changes in land use. Whether you are planning to build a new structure, make modifications to an existing property, or engage in specific activities, obtaining the necessary permits is essential. If you aren’t sure if your project requires a permit it’s recommended to err on the side of caution and contact the Village for guidance.

Failing to obtain a permit before undertaking a project can lead to severe consequences. In the worst case scenario, you may face legal penalties, fines, and forced project suspension. Additionally, non-compliant structures or modifications may need to be demolished or rectified at owner expense. Moreover, lack of permits can affect property values, insurance coverage, and future transactions.

Zoning Permits

If you don’t see the permit you’re looking for, please call (608) 534-6434 or email info@trempealeauwi.com.

Please Note: The Village reviews and approves zoning permits only. For building permits you will be working with the County Land Use Department or the State of WI depending on the type of project.
