Village of Trempealeau Tax Collection and Dog Licensing Information

Due to COVID-19 the Village Office is closed to the public. You may make an appointment to come in during regular business hours if you cannot make alternative arrangements to pay your taxes or get a dog license.

The Village will NOT be accepting any cash  for Tax payments.

About Your Property Tax

When are my taxes due?

Your entire real estate tax bill, or your first installment, is due by January 31, 2021. If you choose to pay in installments, your second installment will be due by July 31, 2021. Make note that the amount of your installments may vary. If you fail to pay the correct amount, at the correct time, to the correct place, it will cause you to incur additional charges.

How are my taxes calculated?

Your tax amount is derived by multiplying the value of your property as of January 1, 2020 and the mill rate for all the taxing jurisdictions, then subtracting any applicable credits and adding any special assessments, special charges or special taxes.  The amount of your taxes cannot change unless there was an error in the application of one of those things.

What happens if I pay late?

By State law, if you fail to pay the entire amount of your first installment by January 31, 2021 then the option to pay in installments is no longer available.  The entire balance then becomes due and will accrue interest and penalty at a rate of 1.5% per month until the delinquent amount is paid in full.

What if I can’t pay my entire 1st installment amount?

We encourage everyone to try and pay at least the amount of their first installment to avoid interest and penalty, it is in your best interest to pay as much as you can by the due date.  Continuing to make payments as you are able until your entire balance is paid in full will help reduce the amount of interest and penalties you will pay and reduce the risk of losing your property. Any payments after January 31st should be made to the County Treasurer.

When am I eligible for a Lottery Credit?

If this property was your primary residence on January 1, 2020, please check your tax bill to verify you received this credit. If you do not see it, you can still apply for one at the Clerk’s office BEFORE January 31, 2021. Remember, you may only claim one credit on your primary residence.

How can I pay?

Below are your options to make the payment that is due by January 31st, 2021.

Pay By Mail

Make your check payable to Village Treasurer.

Write your tax parcel number on the check and enclose the payment stub (the bottom portion of your Real Property Tax Bill or part of if sending first installment) and mail it to:

To receive proper credit, all payments by mail must be postmarked no later than January 31st,2021. 

 If you would like a receipt, be sure to request one. A stamped self-addressed envelope is appreciated.

Pay Online

Paying by using your checking or savings account information is FREE. Have your routing number and account number ready.

Convenience fees apply to credit/debit cards: 2.75% (+50¢ if payment is less than $100)

Please add your tax parcel key to your billing name to avoid erroneous application of payments. If multiple bills are paid please email list of parcel numbers and amounts (including total paid) to 

DO NOT USE your Trempealeau Municipal Utilities Payment Account to pay your TAXES!! The Village Treasurer may reject any payment made inappropriately which could lead to untimely payments!

Pay In Person

Taxes can be paid at the Village Office, 24455 Third Street, Trempealeau in the Community Center. Appointments are required for in person.  Regular Business Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. 

 Payments may also be placed in the Utility Payment drop box which is located outside the front of the main entrance.  Please DO NOT PLACE CASH in the drop box. Please make sure your payment stub or tax parcel id is noted on the check. If you would like a receipt, be sure to request one. A stamped self-addressed envelope is appreciated.

All dog license applications will be processed by staff with as little or no contact as possible and tags may be mailed to dog owners. Forms may be mailed with fees or you may contact the Village Office to arrange drop off of form and fees and pick-up of tags. Please submit completed application for license along with copy of current rabies showing vaccination number and expiration of rabies. If you have any questions please contact the Village Office at 608-534-6434 x.101. Late fees will not be waived this year. Please write a separate check for your dog license.
